9 Easy Ways to Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney Stone… The pain can be unbearable, coming in waves until the tiny stone passes through your urinary tract and out of the body. 

Prevention is paramount when it comes to dealing effectively with kidney stones. To prevent kidney stones, you need to prevent the conditions that support their formation. General things that you can do to prevent kidney stones include – moderate protein intake, minimal salt consumption, and drinking enough water/ liquids to discharge at least two liters of urine per day. Preventing kidney stones isn’t complicated, but it does take some determination.

Stay well-hydrated

Drink plenty of water. The best way to prevent kidney stones is to drink more water and staying hydrated. This dilutes your urine and prevents the formation of kidney stones.

Avoid stone-forming foods

One of the most successful ways to avoid new or recurring kidney stones is by making changes to your diet. If you suffer from kidney stones, your doctor will know much better and may advise you to avoid these foods or to consume them in smaller amounts.

Don’t underestimate your sweat

Saunas, hot yoga and heavy exercise may be good for health, but they may also cause kidney stones. Loss of water through sweating leads to less output of urine. The more you sweat, the less you urinate, which results in the stone-causing minerals to settle in the kidneys/ urinary tract.

Follow a low-oxalate diet

A low oxalate diet has proved beneficial for preventing calcium oxalate stones. It is wise to eat oxalates wisely. Foods high in this chemical may increase the formation of kidney stones. If you’ve already had kidney stones, it is better to eliminate oxalates from your diet completely. Or if you must, eat and drink calcium and oxalate-rich foods together during a meal. This way, the two are more likely to bind to one another in the stomach and intestines before the kidneys begin processing, making the formation of kidney stones less likely.

Limit your consumption of alcohol

Limit the consumption of alcohol because it can increase the levels of uric acid in the blood. You should also avoid crash diets for the same reason. Eating less animal-based protein and eating more fresh fruits and veggies help reduce the chances for stone formation.

Increase your citrus intake

Citrus juice can help reduce or block the formation of stones due to naturally occurring citrate. Good sources of citrus include lemons, oranges, limes, pineapple, and grapefruit. The citrate in these beverages helps block stone formation.

Reduce the intake of sodium

Avoid adding an excessive amount of salt to food, and check the labels on processed food to see the percentage of sodium it contains. When possible, ask that no salt be added to whatever you order on a restaurant menu. Take note of what you drink. Some vegetable juices are high in sodium.

Get the calcium you need

The most common type of kidney stone is the calcium oxalate stone, leading many people to believe they should avoid eating calcium. Low-calcium diets may actually increase your kidney stone risk.

Limit animal protein

Many sources of protein, such as red meat, chicken, poultry, fish, and eggs increase the levels of uric acid you produce. To prevent uric acid stones, cut down on high-purine food, follow a healthy diet that contains mostly vegetables & fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products. Limit sugar by avoiding sweetened foods and drinks, especially those that contain high fructose corn syrup.
